The Rossoneri got back on track with a victory over Sampdoria at the weekend and will play their rescheduled Week 1 fixture against Genoa on Wednesday at 19.30 GMT.

“For a club like Milan, of course the objective must be to get back into the most important European competition,” Leonardo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We believe that we have the ideal structure in place to achieve this target, but we mustn’t make the mistake of turning it into an obsession.

“At the moment, we are three points off fourth place with a game in hand, so perfectly in line with our ambitions.”

The win against Samp cut down reports Gattuso could be dismissed, with Roberto Donadoni the favourite to take over.

“The rumours on Rino came from outside the club, and as far as we are concerned, they are to be considered unfounded. This is why we didn’t need to release a statement denying it, because Rino knows he has the full faith of the club and squad.”
