“No alibis, we’ll use the strongest line-up and must face Betis with courage. We have great respect for them, but must play our style of football.

“We might not be doing that well on a technical level, but we have improved in terms of character. Thanks to the lads who ensured they were ready when called upon, we have seen the light.

“Unfortunately, Mattia Caldara and Lucas Biglia will be out of action for a very long time. Davide Calabria leaves us optimistic, as he can run and do some good fitness work, so we hope to have him back on Sunday.

“Higuain isn’t in the best shape, but he is recovering, while Jack Bonaventura won’t be available against Juventus. He has this knee problem that has been dragging on for months.”

With Higuain injured and Hakan Calhanoglu not doing well either, Gattuso is increasingly reliant on Patrick Cutrone.

“He has improved so much over the last four or five months. He has the hunger and the determination, but made big steps forward in his positioning.

“Dealing with him is difficult, because when he doesn’t play then he sulks, while if he does play then he’s very tense. He wants to play so much.”

Gattuso was asked if he’ll move to three at the back against Betis tomorrow.

“I don’t want to talk about tactics, because it’s not an issue of numbers or systems. We must send a sign to show we are a solid team. We might not play as well, but I want to see solidity and organisation.

“We got the first game with Betis wrong and are in a very passionate stadium against a team that can cause us problems. There is a great deal at stake.

“We didn’t underestimate Betis two weeks ago, but we do hope to put in a different performance.”
