“I tell the lads we’ve got to give our all, because Samp have always managed to recover from setbacks. We got everything wrong last week, from a psychological approach to simple issues of technique. We ended up playing the game Torino wanted.
“I expect my team to always maintain its own identity, whether in victory or defeat. We’re up against a Roma side with character and quality, who are doing very well in the Champions League and had a few hiccups in Serie A.”
Edgar Barreto is out of action for three weeks after tests showed a muscular lesion to his left thigh, while Vasco Regini is also a long-term absentee.
“If Albin Ekdal doesn’t pass the fitness test, then Ronaldo Vieira will start. I won’t use Jakub Jankto and Karol Linetty together, as they are both left-footed.
“I have to use the carrot and the stick method with Jankto, because I expect more from him. He still has to get used to no longer being automatically first choice and it’s because I want him to reach his potential. I believe he has changed his attitude lately, but he won’t start against Roma.”
