Manolo Gabbiadini ‘didn’t give returning to Sampdoria a second’s thought’ but maintains ‘I was always there whenever I was needed most’ for Southampton.

Gabbiadini scored six goals in his first four appearances for Southampton between February and March 2017 but went on to net just six more times for the Saints.

Nonetheless, the striker – who has since rejoined Samp – has only good memories of his time on England’s south coast and is excited about his second spell in Liguria.

“The Premier League is a unique League,” he told Il Secolo XIX.

“It a positive experience, which let me grow, and I’d do it again, but it went so-so for me.

“What will stay with me? Several things. I scored twice in the 2017 [League] Cup Final and scored the goal that kept us up last season.

“Let’s say I was always there whenever I was needed most over the last two years and I still have a wonderful relationship with their fans. They used to chant ‘Lamborghini-Gabbiadini’.

“When you leave somewhere, you don’t think about going back and just think about where you’re going next.

“However, I left Samp on very good terms and when the opportunity [of returning] came up, I didn’t give it a second’s thought.

“Physically I feel good. I haven’t played for over a month but there’s no winter break in England and I’ve kept training.

“What do I expect from Giampaolo? On a tactical level it’ll be up to the Coach to decide, but I’m fine physically.

“Will I kick up a fuss if I don’t play? I’ve never done that, it’s not in my character. I didn’t leave England because I didn’t play. I’ve always accepted the decisions of my Coaches.

“I’m lucky because wherever I’ve gone, I’ve been remembered in a good light. I think it’s because I’m someone who gets their head down and gives it their all.

“I remember my last goal at Marassi against Udinese.”
