The Granata put together five consecutive Serie A clean sheets, something they had not achieved since 1985, and more importantly caught Atalanta in joint sixth place.

“We put in a strong performance, especially as we were up against an excellent opponent that beat Juventus comfortably only a few weeks ago,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were practically perfect in the second half. I wasn’t worried when we didn’t score many goals, because we were creating the chances and I was convinced they’d come sooner or later.

“The next three rounds are the real test of our maturity and then we’ll see if this Toro really has become a great team.”

Mazzarri had little time for suggestions his style of football is negative and dull.

“I am tired of hearing people only talk about the defence. In football, you must be able to defend and attack. Balance is what allows you to win.

“So many ‘philosophers’ of the game go on the attack and concede tons of goals, so I don’t know if they are particularly happy at the end of the day.

“At times, despite coaching for over 20 years, it still makes me laugh to hear certain blowhards talking.”
