Fabio Quagliarella celebrated his Italy recall with the 21st Serie A goal and set a new personal best for assists. “I’m very enthusiastic.”

The 36-year-old was on target in Sampdoria’s 5-3 victory away to Sassuolo this afternoon, allowing him to set new records for goals scored (21) and assists (seven) in one Serie A campaign.

“We had lost to Atalanta, who are a great team, but scoring five goals means we put in an excellent performance today,” Quagliarella told Sky Sport Italia.

“The Coach has always ensured everyone felt important in the squad and therefore were ready to step up when needed.

“We’re in the running for European qualification, but the problem is that every time we get to that final step up, we tend to fall down. There’s a long way to go and we must try to continue like this.”

Quagliarella’s performances for Samp have earned him a recall to the Italy squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

“I try to be of use to the team, whether it’s with goals or assists. It is very satisfying to be back in the Nazionale and I’m very enthusiastic.”
