Marco Giampaolo saw “many positives, but also negatives” after Sampdoria earned a chaotic 5-3 victory away to Sassuolo.

There were eight different scorers on target at the Mapei Stadium, including Fabio Quagliarella, who consolidated his position as Capocannoniere on 21 goals.

“There were many positives from the game that I appreciated, above all the character in playing against a quality side like Sassuolo, and it will improve our self-confidence,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The fact we found the net with five different players was positive. There were also negatives and I’m referring to conceding three goals, particularly the last one, which was avoidable. We switched off at the end.

“I did expect Sassuolo to use three at the back, so we had to push forward in order to cause them problems and that is how we prepared the game. My players did very well to interpret the tactics perfectly and I was impressed with Gregoire Defrel, who had never really played as a trequartista before.

“We started out three years ago at Samp with a long-term project and have been able to develop our players over time. The likes of Karol Linetty, Denis Praet, others are very different players to the ones who first arrived.”
