The Azzurrini had already impressed in the most recent editions, as the Under-17 side lost the European Championship Final to the Netherlands, while the Under-19s were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Portugal.

The Under-17 Nazionale topped their qualifying group with a 100 per cent record of three wins, scoring nine goals and conceding only one.

They defeated Turkey 2-0, Romania 3-0 and today thrashed Austria 4-1, but including the first group phase, Italy won all six matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding one.

The European Under-17 Championship will be held in Ireland from May 3.

As for the Under-19 Italy side, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Belgium, beat Ukraine 3-1 and today saw off Serbia 2-0 thanks to a brace from Atalanta forward Roberto Piccoli.

That result, along with Belgium’s 5-2 defeat to Ukraine, put the Azzurrini through.

They qualified for the European Under-19 Championship in Armenia in July.
