This was the first time since December 2017 that the Rossoneri have lost two Serie A games on the bounce.

A Gianluigi Donnarumma howler in the opening 33 seconds proved decisive, as Gregoire Defrel pounced for the winning goal.

“We were very unlucky on the goal, then made too many simple mistakes, took too many touches, never able to play out from the back the way we wanted to,” the Coach told DAZN.

“Nonetheless, it was a decent performance. When Samp were pressing us, we just gave it away too often, allowing them time to get into shape.

“We were coming off another defeat to Inter, we lost today to an unlucky incident, but the team tried everything to get back into it. There are still many rounds to go and we shouldn’t get downbeat.”

Gattuso tried to shake things up by introducing Andrea Conti, Patrick Cutrone and Lucas Paqueta, but to no avail.

“We tried to press them a bit higher, then moved to a three-man defence in an attempt to fill their penalty area with more men going forward.

“We tried three at the back in a friendly, but we’re playing every three days at the moment and there’s no time for the kind of tactical drills we need. The same goes for Paqueta behind the strikers.”
