Marco Giampaolo admitted ‘we didn’t play like Sampdoria’ during Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Torino but insisted ‘nothing has changed’ in the race for Europe.

Andrea Belotti’s brace moved Toro three points clear of Samp in the Serie A table, while Giampaolo’s side missed the chance to move level with sixth-placed Lazio, who lost to SPAL.

“Our approach to the game wasn’t great, given we started slowly, weren’t very reactive and weren’t very clear-headed when it came to finding solutions,” the Coach said after the game.

“Torino don’t let you play much, but we should’ve taken more risks to come out of the situations we were in.

“We didn’t play like Sampdoria. We were a bit better in the second half but still far from our usual standards.

“All our remaining games are playoffs. They’re all difficult matches. Torino are only four points away from fourth place, but this is a balanced league and it’s all very open.

“The teams who are fighting relegation are tough. Effort is what makes the difference. We must stand firm.

“We adapted to the demands of the game but just didn’t play with the necessary clarity.

“Belotti played particularly well and we conceded the goal with practically 10 men, like it happened against them earlier in the season, but it’s part of the game.

“For the Europa League, the race is still on, nothing has changed. Anything can happen in eight games.

“You lose a game and you're out, you win one and you’re in. Certainly it would’ve been better if we picked up a result in Turin.”
