Vincenzo Montella is back on the Fiorentina bench and insists he turned down other proposals. “Experiences improved me, including the negative ones.”

The tactician had already been at the Stadio Franchi from 2012 to 2015, but returned today after Stefano Pioli resigned.

“The Della Valle family and director Pantaleo Corvino convinced me. It was a different Fiorentina back then, at the end of a fairly stormy era,” said Montella in his Press conference.

“We cleared the air like fair and honest people, but we’ll see on the field what we manage to achieve. If we remain united, we’ll achieve more. The fans are disappointed because they feel more could’ve been done. There is less enthusiasm and it has to be recreated.

“We resume with players who are eager to be decisive and not dwell on the past, who look forward with strength and conviction. I also tell the fans, if we manage to get going quickly, this can still be an historic season.”

Fiorentina are in the Coppa Italia semi-final, having drawn the first leg 3-3 with Atalanta, and could still qualify for the Europa League via that tournament.

“I accepted because I love this profession and it’s not true that I had no alternatives. I had many proposals, including ones from Italy, but they weren’t convincing. I came to Fiorentina because I ended up talking to (director Pantaleo) Corvino about football for three hours and it’s that passion I admire.

“I have changed too, as I have a few more grey hairs. Experiences improved me, including the negative ones. I am crazy about this work and seeing players who can improve. Once Fiorentina called, we didn’t even talk about figures.

“Federico Chiesa is an extraordinary player and every Coach would love to work with him, because he’s hungry, he’s talented and that shows in every training session.”
