The derby between Juventus and Torino will now be played on Friday May 3 after the original date was on the anniversary of the Superga disaster.

The Derby della Mole had originally been scheduled for May 4, but that date fell on the 70th anniversary of the plane crash into the Superga hill, which claimed the lives of all 31 passengers on the plane carrying the Grande Torino squad.

Granata President Urbano Cairo urged Lega Serie A to reschedule the game, and his wishes have been granted.

Juve’s exit from the Champions League made the decision easier, as there was no longer a scheduling problem over bringing the date forward.

Every year on the anniversary, the entire Torino squad attends a special church service at the Superga basilica, where the names of the fallen are read out by the captain.
