In an open letter on the official club website, Pallotta confirmed some parts of the expose in La Repubblica about Daniele De Rossi’s turbulent exit were true, specifically blaming Monchi for “lying” to the captain and getting their transfer strategy wrong.

“Monchi asked for 100 per cent control and trust as our sporting director. I look back almost daily on our summer transfer market and maybe I shouldn’t have given up all that control.”

RomaPress.net contacted Monchi, who is now back as director of sport at his previous club Sevilla, for comment.

“I don’t want to respond to Jim. It’s better for everyone that we move forward,” he said.
