It was a very tough situation, as Cittadella won the first leg 2-0, but Hellas turned it around for a 3-0 victory at the Bentegodi to secure promotion into the top flight after just one year in the wilderness.

“These are unforgettable moments,” Verona Coach Aglietti told DAZN.

“I’ve lost my voice and can’t find the words. Thank you to this squad for the way they faced up to difficulties. We achieved something extraordinary and will remember this evening for the rest of our lives.”

Aglietti was only brought in last month, as Coach Fabio Grosso was fired following an eight-round winless run that saw them plummet down the standings.

It was almost a miracle for Cittadella, who have never played in Serie A, come from a little town near Padova and have the smallest wage bill in all of Serie B this season.

“It’s disappointing that people talk of Cittadella as a fairy-tale, because this is a reality in Italian football and deserves more respect,” Coach Roberto Venturato told Rai Sport.

“We accept the defeat, but it was disappointing we were unable to play with 11 men against 11.”

Cittadella had two players sent off for double bookings, ending the match with only nine men.
