Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out a Matthijs de Ligt own goal, but Juventus veteran Gigi Buffon saved three Inter penalties in the shoot-out.
This was the second International Champions Cup game for both teams, as Juve lost at the last second to Tottenham 3-2 and Inter fell to Manchester United.
The Nerazzurri had an aggressive start in Nanjing and Wojciech Szczesny had to fingertip a Stefano Sensi free kick out from under the bar, but on the resulting Sensi corner, it took an unlucky bounce off De Ligt’s shin, not a good way to mark his first start in a Bianconeri jersey.
Juve tried to enact Maurizio Sarri’s passing game, but as seen with Chelsea last season, in the early stages it can be slow and largely ineffective possession.
Ivan Perisic, again played upfront by Antonio Conte, hit the side-netting on the counter and Marcelo Brozovic stung the goalkeeper’s gloves from distance.
Federico Bernardeschi had the first Juve chance on the stroke of half-time, blasting just over after a give-and-go on the edge of the box.
Sarri made several changes at half-time and Juventus were more determined, Cristiano Ronaldo and Adrien Rabiot forcing saves, while the Portuguese star felt he’d been pushed for a penalty.
Ronaldo did get the equaliser when his free kick took a decisive deflection off Milan Skriniar in the wall to wrong-foot substitute goalkeeper Daniele Padelli.
Ronaldo thought he’d scored a second when dribbling around Padelli, but the goalkeeper somehow got back for a decisive tackle as he was preparing to fire into an empty net.
Juve kept pushing, but the draw meant they had to decide victory on a penalty shoot-out and 41-year-old Buffon took centre-stage, saving spot-kicks from Andrea Ranocchia and Samuele Longo.
Rabiot could’ve won it, only to blast over, while Nicolò Barella’s penalty squirmed under Buffon’s body and Federico Bernardeschi hit the bar.
It went to sudden death and Buffon again saved Borja Valero’s spot-kick for Merih Demiral to convert the decisive penalty.
