Lorenzo Pellegrini thinks Roma have a keeper in Paulo Fonseca but has urged his club to give the Coach time.

Fonseca was confirmed as Roma’s new Coach earlier in the summer, and Pellegrini has been encouraged by the Portuguese’s early impact.

“I like the way Fonseca thinks about football,” he told Roma TV.

“He always puts you at ease and is very direct: if he wants something from you, you must do it, period.

“He’s only been here for a few weeks, though, so we have to give him time.”

Despite being just 23, the midfielder is already considered one of the Giallorossi’s ‘senatori’, given the recent exits of Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas.

I try to stay close to the young players,” continued the Roman.

“It’s not easy for them, just as it wasn’t for me. I’m glad that the players who have developed here are able to integrate them.

“Riccardi and Antonucci are only 18 and 20 years old, but they can do very well for us.

“Intensity isn’t only physical, it’s also mental, as is concentration. Intensity means training like a professional must.

“I’m getting back on track: I’m a bit behind those who have trained more. Last season was difficult because of things that happened on and off the field.

“This year we have to only think about playing and winning: everything around us will have to stay out.

“I prefer the attacking phase, but I’m also trying to improve the defensive side of my game.

“A central midfielder in 2019 has to know how to do everything, otherwise he has to do something else with himself.

“Roma have an abundance of midfielders, but the matches come thick and fast and Fonseca demands a great deal of energy from us midfielders.”

Finally, he was asked about the arrival of Italy teammates Leonardo Spinazzola and Gianluca Mancini.

“Having already played together will help us forge a bond. We must also be cohesive outside the field.”
