Former CEO Adriano Galliani tried to bring Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and Marco Giampaolo to Milan, “but the Chinese owners wanted Vincenzo Montella.”

The director was in charge of Rossoneri transfer strategy for over 30 years under President Silvio Berlusconi and they have now reunited at Serie C club Monza.

“I had courted Conte a great deal, but was never able to get him,” Galliani told Sport Mediaset on his 75th birthday.

“I had courted Conte a great deal, but was never able to get him,” Galliani told Sport Mediaset on his 75th birthday.

“Sarri too was very close to Milan, but unfortunately didn’t come. In the summer of 2016, I was pushing to get Giampaolo for the Milan bench and he even came to my house for talks.

“I consider him to be a great teacher of football, plus he plays with Berlusconi’s favourite system, the 4-3-1-2. However, the Chinese owners wanted Montella, while I pushed for Giampaolo.”

It’s a case of better late than never, because Giampaolo took on the San Siro role this summer, even though Galliani and Yonghong Li are long gone.
