SPAL full-back Mohamed Fares went under the knife today following the tear of his anterior cruciate ligament in the left knee.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury during a friendly against Cesena on August 8.

Fares is expected to be out of action for four to six months and had the operation in Bologna’s Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli.

The Algeria international had 35 Serie A appearances last season, scoring three goals with one assist.

Before the injury setback, he had been linked with transfers to Inter, Torino or Fiorentina.
