Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti said they intend to “become protagonists again” in the Champions League and discussed Mauro Icardi’s situation.

The Nerazzurri have been drawn in the group with Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague.

“We return to Barcelona, we know the potential of that team, but we’ll fight for every point,” Zanetti told Sky Sport Italia.

“The other two teams in the group are strong, we can face them in the best way and hope to reach the start in good shape. This team was built to become protagonists again. That is why we chose Antonio Conte and built this team.

“Antonio certainly brought a strong mentality, you know the way he experiences football and he is able to pass that on to the team, as we saw in friendlies and the opening game of the season.

“We believe that we can fight it out with anyone in the Champions League. The first objective is to get through the group, then it’s a whole other tournament from the Round of 16 onwards. We’ll see how far we can go.”

Zanetti was inevitably asked about Icardi, who is continuing to refuse any offers, despite being frozen out of the squad.

“The club has expressed itself, the situation has not changed. We’ll wait for the end of the transfer market and hope to find a solution that suits everyone.

“You know what approach the club has taken, there are only a few days left of the transfer window and we want to continue improving the squad.”

If Icardi does remain, will he be part of the Champions League squad or left out?

“We haven’t discussed it yet, as the transfer window is open. After that, we will evaluate every situation.”
