“I think it’s an advantage to experience the Rome Derby as a foreigner,” the current Marseille Coach told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“When I arrived at Roma, I realised from two Romans and Romanisti like Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi how they lived this fixture. Talking to them, you could sense how much it weighed on their shoulders and that, at time, can make you lose sharpness.

“Fortunately, I did not have that weighing me down. I know Fonseca, he is a fine Coach and does not need my advice. He knows you don’t play the derby, you win it.”

Roma are the underdogs going in this time, as Lazio crushed Sampdoria 3-0 last week, whereas the Giallorossi repeatedly fumbled their lead to draw 3-3 with Genoa.

“There are no favourites in the derby. Watching the game with Genoa, I realised Roma needed reinforcements in defence and Chris Smalling can be the right buy.

“The strikers can be decisive, but I am looking at Lorenzo Pellegrini, as I think he can make the difference. When I arrived, Roma were in psychological ruins and the club directors were distraught that the derby arrived so early in the season. I saw it as a great chance to cancel out the past and start afresh. I believe the same is true for Fonseca.”
