Kalidou Koulibaly has insisted that Napoli will finally end their wait for the Scudetto this season. “The defeat in Turin left no trace.”
Koulibaly’s last-gasp own goal saw Juventus beat Napoli 4-3 before the international break, but the defender made it clear his side had drained the disappointment out of their system.
“Naples doesn’t put up with you, it loves you,” he continued to Corriere dello Sport.
“I’ve witnessed it and repeatedly, not only in the happy moments that football gives you but also in everyday life.
“On one of the tough days, the one after my own goal against Juventus, the people mellowed me.
“I recovered very quickly. As for the win in April 2018, I felt Naples vibrate in every corner of the world.
“Who will win the Scudetto? Napoli. And you can write that. We believe it, the defeat in Turin left no trace. The season has also just begun.”
The 28-year-old then discussed President Aurelio De Laurentiis rejecting bids of €100m, Diego Maradona’s support and facing Liverpool again in the Champions League.
“It must have hurt, he’d have been richer... but he decided so because he loves me. Maybe it’s because I’m worth €150m? That’s nice... The market is strange, that’s the way it is.
“Does Ancelotti love me too, you say? Well... we haven’t bonded as much!
“Maradona has my shirt... That means, then, that I’m on the right track, even if the path is long. And knowing that he has my No 26 is a source of pride.
“The Champions League gives me chills, goose bumps. I was [Sadio] Mane’s captain, even if he’ll never admit it.
“It’ll be another spectacle with Liverpool. We’re here to give something of ourselves, have fun and share certain emotions.
“What sense does it make, tell me, to make monkey chants?”
