Roma starlet Nicolo Zaniolo confirms “No 10 is the role I prefer” but is fully aware “I still have to grow as a person and as a player.”

Zaniolo is already considered one of the Giallorossi’s best players, despite having just a year of first-team football behind him, but his Italy career took a setback when he was dropped for tardiness earlier in the month.

“I grew up in a year, but I still have a long way to go,” he told Roma’s Match Program.

“A year has passed, but I still have to grow as a person and as a player. The club, Fonseca and the staff are helping me and I’ll do my best to stay on this path.

“My objective is to keep growing, on both a football and human level, making myself available to the team so we can achieve important objectives.

“The team are full of good champions and young players. Us young people must take things from them and give our best to bring Roma back where they deserve to be. Roma are as competitive as can be.

“We have a tough game ahead of us. Bologna are doing very well, they have seven points and are up there.

“We have to beat them so we can go up the table. We deserve to be up there. Our way of playing mustn’t change. We’re Roma, we’re strong and we must impose our game against whoever we play.”

The 20-year-old has played in a variety of attacking positions for the Lupi, so which is his favourite?

“No 10 is the role I prefer, but I also feel good out wide, like I showed in the Europa League.

“I’ll play wherever I’m needed by Fonseca, who I really like, with maximum focus, and I’ll give my best to contribute to the team’s victories.

“We’ve played almost perfectly in our last two games, but now a very important run awaits us.

“We must keep going like this, on the right foot. Perhaps after this run of matches will we be able to make our first considerations.”
