“It’s wonderfully satisfying, for my age, my career and that looking back I realise I have an incredible life and the kind of exciting career I always wanted,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia, also wearing the captain’s armband today.

Curiously, his last game for Juve was also against Hellas Verona in Turin, on May 18 2018, but he returned after one season at Paris Saint-Germain.

Verona is in my destiny. I hope it’s a good return and a wonderful day for everyone, because if it’s good for everyone, it’ll be good for me too.”

Buffon was asked how long he intends to keep going and if challenging Wojciech Szczesny for the gloves caused problems.

“There is no duality with Szczesny, that term is inappropriate, because the situation has been clear since the start and I accepted it without the slightest doubt. I am happy with the situation, I am happy to be back at Juve, to share more experiences – good or bad – with my teammates and the Juve fans.

“That is why I returned and was content to accept this role of understudy. It might be limited on the field, but there are many other moments behind the scenes that allow you to make your mark, influence the team and have your own achievements.

“Let’s not start asking in September how long I’ll keep going, otherwise it’ll be every week for months! I feel good physically, that’s all I can say.”
