Lecce boss Fabio Liverani was critical of his own players after a 4-1 defeat to Napoli, but above all the referee for a retaken penalty.

The Salentini were fresh from a 2-1 win away to Torino, but fell at the Stadio Via del Mare, not without controversy.

Gabriel had saved Lorenzo Insigne’s penalty, but the referee ordered it to be retaken, as the goalkeeper had moved off his line too early.

Insigne converted to make it 2-0 and the game was all downhill from there.

“It changes little whether we lose 1-0 or 4-1,” Liverani told DAZN.

“We conceded a goal on a double ricochet, but what we really got wrong today was our own counter-attacking approach. Filippo Falco and Diego Farias had to hold the ball up more and wait for the wingers, but they were too hasty.

“There are many small things we are working on improving, gaining in experience. I expected more when we had possession of the ball. We weren’t phenomenal after Torino and we’re not useless after Napoli.

“I hope the rule on penalties will be implemented everywhere in Serie A the same way, because I don’t see why this one had to be retaken. “
