“Honestly, there shouldn’t be all this surprise, as we have a large squad and the rule of only 18 is limiting,” the director of sport told Sky Sport Italia.

Napoli have a limited Champions League squad because they have so few homegrown talents, of which Insigne is one.

“The Coach opted for a tall striker like Fernando Llorente and the smaller one being Dries Mertens. It’s nothing in particular, someone has to sit it out, we know that.

“Insigne took it well, there’s no problem. Arkadiusz Milik had a troubled summer with this injury he couldn’t seem to shake off, but he’s finally found full fitness now.”

Giuntoli was asked which players in the Genk squad he was particularly impressed by.

“They’ve always produced some very interesting young talents. Sander Berge is worth watching, the right-back Joachim Maehle has quality.”
