Roberto De Zerbi has warned Sassuolo that their 1-0 win at Verona must be “a turning point. The lads must now not stop at the first sign of positivity.”

Filip Djuricic’s long-range strike gave Sassuolo their first Serie A win of the season on the road, but De Zerbi was in no mood to shower praise on his squad.

“We didn’t come from a good run of form. We won this game through suffering: I hope it’s a turning point, everyone showed great desire to play and it’s a good sign,” he said after the game.

“I saw character and blood, we can do well like this. It’s one of the ways we can get back to doing well if we keep it up.

“I’m lucky to coach so many talented players, I know Djuricic’s qualities crystal clear because I’ve had him at my disposal for years.

“I’d have liked him to up his game after the 0-1 because it’s not right for him to be satisfied. He must make the most of his potential in such games.

“My heart cried leaving out Caputo for Defrel given the type of game we were playing, but it’s because I wished everyone could play.

“The lads must now not stop at the first sign of positivity. They must continue to push on and keep themselves fuelled.

“These are things that need to be improved quickly, for the sake of everyone at Sassuolo.

“Believe me when I say that more attention is paid to the attacking phase than defensive.

“We’re the team who have had the third-most attempts in the top five European Leagues.

“This game went better than the others in terms of the clear-cut chances we created. This victory doesn’t mean we’ve left the complicated period behind.

“It hasn’t been easy. We’ve given everything but conceded so many goals. There have been so many negative incidents. The weeks have weighed heavily on us…”
