Inter are in mourning after the death of Scudetto-winning defender Alberto Rivolta, the day before his 52nd birthday.

He had been suffering from a rare condition affecting the central nervous system for the last 25 years.

Rivolta came through the Inter youth academy and made seven senior appearances for the Nerazzurri, including one in Giovanni Trapattoni’s record-breaking side of 1988-89.

He was forced to retire due to his illness only two years later, at the age of 25, following a brief spell at Livorno.

“FC Internazionale Milano is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alberto Rivolta,” read a statement.

“Born in 1967 in Lissone, Rivolta, a former defender, came through the Nerazzurri’s youth ranks at the beginning of the 1980s and made his debut for the First Team against Como in Serie A on 15 December 1985.

“Over the course of his stay at the Club between 1985 and 1987 and then during the 1988-89 season, he made a total of seven appearances.

“The most memorable one was no doubt his outing on the penultimate matchday of the '88-'89 campaign, meaning he became one of the players to feature in that heroic, record-breaking Scudetto-winning side.

“The Club, in remembering Rivolta’s courage when fighting his illness, expresses its deepest condolences to his family and friends on behalf of the whole Inter family.”
