It was meant to kick off at 19.45 GMT, but the Stadio Via del Mare has been under storms for hours that even promoted a temporary blackout.

Trees have come down in the car park behind the arena and kick-off was delayed.

“The issue seems to be that the pitch is full of water. If the rain were to stop, the drainage system would probably work, but the weather reports suggest it’s going to continue raining with this intensity for a few more hours,” Sticchi Damiani told Sky Sport Italia.

Cagliari chief Carli was even more in favour of a postponement, especially as the Sardinians play a fast-paced style of football.

“If we want to watch a football match, it might be better to play tomorrow. It’s not up to us, the referee will make his decision and we’ll warm up to prepare for a great game. We’ll see,” Carli told Sky Sport Italia.

“We didn’t expect Cagliari to be this high up the table after 12 rounds. What we did believe was that this team had a lot of potential and would continue to improve going forward. We still believe that and have strong ambitions.

“Rolando Maran is to be admired, as he works hard, is very precise, has a great staff and had done very well last season too, as people forget we managed to get along even with only 11 players available at a time.

“It is in moments of difficulty that you judge a coach and we saw what a great job he did in those circumstances.”
