The Sardinians have the opportunity to go clear in fourth place, as Roma were held to a 0-0 draw by Inter last night.

“After the Sampdoria match and what we earned with our hard work, of course there is enthusiasm,” smiled the coach in his press conference.

Cagliari had been 3-1 down at home to Sampdoria on Monday with 20 minutes to go, but fought back for a last-gasp 4-3 victory.

They then beat Samp again on Thursday in the Coppa Italia to reach the Round of 16.

“We’re playing three games in six days, but we are ready for anything. We have to be, because Sassuolo have enormous potential in attack, as we saw when they held Juventus to a 2-2 draw last week.

“We know it’s going to be a difficult game against a quality side and I need to evaluate many things in my selection.”

That includes midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who is embroiled in a transfer row with the club and could leave in January.

“He had a knock this morning and we are having tests. At this moment he is called up, then we’ll see. I never talked about the contract, all I care about is how he plays and trains. I am a coach, that is my job.”
