With that in mind, supporters in their droves flocked to Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo in the early hours, despite the sleet and cold weather, to greet their triumphant team.

Midfielder Marten de Roon wrote on Twitter: “We arrive at 3am. I don’t think there will be any fans at the airport.”

He then tweeted a video clip of fans outside the team bus, waving flags, singing chants and setting off flares.

Papu Gomez and Luis Muriel also climbed onto the roof of the bus to join in on the celebrations.
