Thousands of Atalanta fans waited until the early hours of Thursday morning to celebrate their team’s dramatic Champions League exploits.
Atalanta had lost their first three group games but won 3-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine last night to miraculously reach the last 16.
With that in mind, supporters in their droves flocked to Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo in the early hours, despite the sleet and cold weather, to greet their triumphant team.
Midfielder Marten de Roon wrote on Twitter: “We arrive at 3am. I don’t think there will be any fans at the airport.”
He then tweeted a video clip of fans outside the team bus, waving flags, singing chants and setting off flares.
Papu Gomez and Luis Muriel also climbed onto the roof of the bus to join in on the celebrations.
