Sporting director Pierpaolo Marino has said Udinese are “gradually” maturing but also warned them about being “careful” against Sassuolo.

Rodrigo de Paul decided the game with a late goal in the 1-0 win over Lecce on Monday and Marino was happy to see his team show the same “heart and ability” as they did during the 2-1 win against Cagliari before the winter break.

“We were a bit lucky in the first half,” he told Udinese TV. “Babacar hit the crossbar and Musso made a great save, but it stopped there, despite Lecce playing a good game and the strong wind.

“In the second half we played almost only in their half of the pitch.”

“It’s hard to read into the statistics, because many teams perform differently between home and away games.

“I believe Udinese also had shown heart and ability against Cagliari and we’ve seen a team that are gradually becoming more aware. We saw it today, even with the change of shape during the final minutes.

“Now, we must be careful, because we are facing a Sassuolo team who will be angry after their defeat to Genoa.

“Thanks to the many fans who came here today, in what’s probably the longest trip for our following. Thank you very much,” he said. “Now, let’s try to fill the stadium in the next game. We support this Udinese and we try to make it grow together.”
