Caldara: 'Won't let Atalanta down'

Mattia Caldara does “not want to let Atalanta down” after returning to Bergamo from Milan. “Nothing really has changed since I left.”

The defender returned to his hometown club after spells at Juventus and Milan, moving on an 18-month loan with obligation to buy for €15m.

“I am really excited to be here again, but I see returning to Atalanta as a starting point,” Caldara told the official club channel.

“I’ve not played for a year-and-a-half, so I know it’ll be difficult to win my place in the team, but I’ve arrived with a lot of humility and fully aware I have to work hard. I can’t wait to get started and give my contribution.

“I know Gian Piero Gasperini well and his methods. Nothing really has changed since I left, as I know what the coach wants and will give my all.”

Caldara made only two appearances in a Milan jersey, as he suffered from two serious injuries.

“I feel good now, so I just need to find that consistency and confidence I had when I was playing regularly. I want to repay the affection of the Atalanta fans, as they have always cared for me. This is a gamble for them too and I feel the responsibility for those who put their faith in me.

“Atalanta gave me the opportunity to get myself back in the spotlight and I don’t want to let them down.”

When Caldara left, Atalanta were in the Europa League, but they will face Valencia in the Champions League Round of 16 next month.

“It’s an extraordinary team this season and the last 16 of the Champions League was unthinkable until recently. It’ll be an honour to take part in this game.”
