Sampdoria coach Claudio Ranieri felt like “eating my players alive with some oil, salt and pepper” after their disastrous 5-1 defeat to Lazio.

Ranieri had said before the game that if he didn’t see Samp fully focused and determined from the start, he’d eat his players alive. So what will he do in their next training session?

“I’ll put some oil, salt and pepper on this evening and eat them alive,” replied the coach on Sky Sport Italia.

“Not only did we not win the first or the second ball, we didn’t win the third or fourth either. We were incredibly sluggish, did not react and simply didn’t play as a team. It was our worst performance since I’ve been here.

Lazio deserve all the credit in the world, as they were well-drilled and enjoyed their football. We just weren’t there.

“It should in theory be an easier job for me next week, as the players ought to feel determined to make up for this next week and prove this isn’t the real Sampdoria.”
