Gianluigi Buffon has admitted that it “was a bad defeat” against Napoli but insisted that Juventus “needed” a setback to “find hunger”.

The 2-1 defeat at the San Paolo was the Bianconeri’s second in Serie A this term and they are still top of the League with a three-point gap down to Inter at second.

Lazio are third in Serie A with one game in hand and could potentially cut the gap to a mere two-point lead in favour of the Old Lady.

Buffon, who turns 42 today, has admitted that Juventus “perhaps underestimated” Napoli slightly and has claimed they “would have won” if it meant they would lose the top spot.

“It was a bad defeat, sure,” Buffon told Sky Sport Italia. “We could and should have done better.

“However, those delicate negative steps are needed to find the hunger and humility, and to not take anything for granted.

“Perhaps we underestimated Napoli, who are in a crisis. We knew that we would remain top even in the event of a loss. If it had been a decisive game, I’m sure Juventus would’ve won. We needed more intensity on our part.”
