“Obviously, we did not enjoy the 5-1 defeat to Lazio and I cancelled the day off from training this week, the least we could do,” said Semplici in his press conference.

“We worked well, so on Wednesday I took the whole squad out to dinner in a team-building exercise. There has been a negative aura around the team, almost as if we are already relegated, but we are not relegated.

“We knew this would be a tough season, but I want to make an appeal to all those who have supported us over the years to come here and stand by our side. We got some things wrong, but we can still secure safety. We have never given up and we never will.

“Just having Serie A football in Ferrara is extraordinary and we are always going to be in a battle to stay here. We can’t see everything so negatively.

“I want the club and fans to be proud of these lads and the performance is above all important in terms of character.”

It won’t be easy, as Sassuolo are brimming with confidence after a 4-2 win over Roma.

“Sassuolo are a well-drilled outfit, but we can make life very difficult for them."
