This fixture is played behind closed doors at San Siro as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak in Italy, which has affected over 500 people, with 17 deaths so far.

“It’s certainly a surreal atmosphere, as the crowd is a fundamental component of football,” the director general told Sky Sport Italia.

“Unfortunately, there is a very clear Government order that runs until midnight on Sunday, so public health must be safeguarded. We accept the decision, albeit with a heavy heart.

“The Europa League is also different compared to the Champions League, although the motivation ought to remain the same. It’s also an issue of planning the schedule, training and travelling, but we must honour this competition, even in a surreal atmosphere like the one we have this evening.

“Inevitably, having the stands empty will increase the difficulties for our players.”

Eriksen starts in midfield, as Marcelo Brozovic is rested, but can the Dane be used in a more advanced role too?

“He is a quality player and we saw this opportunity in January, so we had to take it. Antonio Conte is quite rightly very prudent, as his philosophy is to gradually introduce new players to the team. It will take a little patience, but he is trying to get into the tactical mindset.

“Along with the value that these players bring, experience is also important and we want to mix youth with that international level of experience.

“It’s a journey we started in June and will continue into the future, all under the guidance of our coach.”

Conte will be up against his old club Juventus on Sunday evening, but that too is set to be played without any fans present due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

“Conte is preparing for that match the same way as any other Serie A fixture. He wants to give his best and get the best from his players in return.

“The Juventus match will be important, but not fundamental.”

Marotta also confirmed captain Samir Handanovic has now healed from a fractured little finger and can resume training with the ball tomorrow.
