“We are prepared for this game, despite the difficulties, because changing plans and not having matches to play has not been easy,” Conte told Inter TV.

“As I said to the lads, we must do well in these situations to adapt quickly and keep working hard. The players are extraordinary, as they are always ready to sacrifice and raise the bar so that we can play these fixtures that mean a great deal at the top of the table.”

The Derby d’Italia was meant to be a week ago, but it was postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak, then re-organised behind closed doors.

“It’s inevitable that the crowd is an important component when playing football, especially in such high-profile matches. However, at this very delicate moment, the health of the citizens comes first and we must adapt to ensure things are done as safely as possible.

“It’s a tricky situation, we all have families, and we cannot ignore what is happening. Having said that, it is important as professionals to know the date of the game and have a clear plan.”

Juventus had wanted to play with only local fans, because at that time the rate of cases had dropped significantly in Turin, but eventually the situation became so serious that all Serie A games were ordered behind closed doors until at least April 3.

It means Conte will return to the Juventus Stadium for the first time as an opponent and will be greeted by total silence.

“Inevitably, the details make the difference in games like this,” added the coach. “We know that we are up against a very strong side, so we have respect for what Juventus are doing. As for us, we have the desire and ambition to get as close to them as possible through hard work.

“Juventus-Inter will always be a big game, but the important thing is that now it also means a great deal for the top of the table. This is testament to the work we have been doing and I will always be grateful to the players for their ambition.”

Juventus and Inter battled on the transfer market for Romelu Lukaku over the summer, the Nerazzurri snatching him from Manchester United.

“I can’t help but be happy with how Romelu’s first year in Italy is going. He sets the example for the squad, as he works so hard to improve himself and the team. I am very happy with his performances, but let’s also not forget there is a team that works for him too.”
