Once again, Lombardy is the epicentre with 966 deaths over the last three weeks (an extra 76), along with 4,898 currently in hospital, of which 732 are in intensive care.

Another 1,865 people have tested positive in the region, taking the total to 11,685.

It is hoped the peak will have been reached thanks to the lockdown measures and new cases should begin to slow down in the next couple of days.

There are growing concerns on the severity of the pandemic, as more cases have been registered who did not have pre-existing health conditions.

Among the dead over the last 24 hours are an emergency telephone operator in Bergamo, aged 47.
