SPAL defender Thiago Cionek earned a commendation from the Mayor of Ferrara after he chased down and caught a criminal trying to rob a store.
Tobacconists are one of the only shops still allowed to stay open during the coronavirus shutdown in Italy, so were considered easy prey by this criminal.
However, as he tried to run away, the robber found himself chased down and caught by SPAL defender Cionek.
The 33-year-old Poland international pinned the thief down until police arrived.
“After hearing the news, I telephoned Thiago Cionek personally to thank him,” said Mayor of Ferrara Alan Fabbri.
“His gesture was one of great generosity and altruism, becoming even more special during this difficult moment. Seeing a robbery and intervening, without fear, chasing him down the street, means caring about what happens in this city.”
SPAL training is suspended, but evidently Cionek is keeping himself in good shape, at least when it comes to a sprint.
