There were another 570 deaths from coronavirus in Italy on Friday, but the rate of fatalities has dropped and more hospital beds have been freed up.

Today’s death toll is 40 less than that recorded 24 hours ago, while there have been falls in the numbers of patients hospitalised (-157) and in intensive care (-108).

ICU admissions have therefore dropped for the fourth consecutive day, although Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is set to announce an extension to the lockdown this evening.

As of Friday, there have been 147,577 positive tests of COVID-19 (+3,951), with 98,273 of them currently active (+1,396).

A total of 30,455 people have recovered (+1,979) and 18,849 have died.

Out of the 98,273 active cases, 66,534 are in self-isolation (+1,657), 28,242 are in hospital with symptoms and 3,497 are in intensive care.

There have now been 906,864 tests, an increase of 53,495 since yesterday.
