Robin Gosens believes Atalanta continuing their Champions League adventure will help the people of Bergamo return to normality. “We want to make our fans happy.”

Bergamo is the epicentre of the Italian pandemic, as of 26,977 deaths throughout the country, 13,449 were in the region of Lombardy and more specifically 2,940 in Bergamo.

However, the club is eager to get back out there and complete what had been an historic season, sitting fourth in Serie A and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

“I hope that we can get back to playing soon, clearly with a protocol that can guarantee safety for all those working within football,” Gosens told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s been difficult during the lockdown, although fortunately nobody I know personally has contracted coronavirus. I’ve been using the extra time to study psychology and prepare for my exams.

“Playing in the Champions League is something fantastic and that will still be the case if we have to play in August. I really hope we can continue what we started in this competition, as it wouldn’t feel right to end the journey this way.

“The people of Bergamo adore Atalanta, so we want to repay them and give everything to make our fans happy. I also hope we can all learn after this to appreciate the little things, as just being free to move and feeling healthy are the most precious parts of life.”

Gosens has had the best season of his career, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 30 competitive games.

“I always said that I wanted to raise the bar and worked very hard for this. It’s not normal that a player in the wing-back role should score this many goals, nor was it really my objective, but it’s a nice bonus.

“There is extra motivation for me to show what I can do and get into the Germany squad.”

Coach Joachim Low had confirmed Gosens was going to be called up for the friendly against Italy in March before the shutdown.
