Former Udinese star Amoroso has revealed that Thierry Henry rejected swapping clubs with him before his historic move to Arsenal in 1999.

Henry managed just three goals for Juve in the second half of 98-99, whereas Amoroso went on to finish the season as Serie A’s Capocannoniere with 22 goals, despite playing for an Udinese side unfashionable in comparison.

The Frenchman ultimately fared more successful, signing for Arsenal in the summer of 1999 and becoming their all-time top scorer.

“It gives me a lot of pleasure because it was very difficult to achieve such a feat with a provincial team,” Amoroso told Sky Sport Italia.

“At the time, there were the best players in Serie A, great defenders. We had a very strong club and team, which gave me the chance to be crowned Capocannoniere.

“It was very important for my career. I wasn’t playing for Juve, Milan or Inter, I didn’t get lots of service.

“There was the possibility of going to Juve in exchange with Henry, but he refused it. After that, I stayed in Udine and he went to Arsenal.”

The 45-year-old, who remains the last Brazilian Capocannoniere, famously scored twice when the Zebrette beat the Bianconeri 3-0 away from home back in April 1997.

“There were only 10 of us and we still won 3-0 in Turin.”
