A new legal battle is in the offing after Sky Sport Italia reportedly wrote to the Lega Serie A warning they would not pay the final instalment for television rights.

According to news agency ANSA, La Gazzetta dello Sport and Calcio e Finanza, Sky Sport Italia wrote to the Lega Serie A with a letter to clarify they are not going to pay the remaining instalment for the 2019-20 season.

DAZN, who own the rights to transmit three fixtures per weekend, had already informed clubs that they would be withholding the final payment.
It is only the beginning of the negotiations, as it’s reported the companies would accept a reduction or a spreading out of the payments, an idea that has already been rejected by the Serie A clubs en masse.
An emergency Lega Serie A meeting has been called for next week and this is going to be one of the main subjects for discussion.
This will inevitably impact on talks for the next TV rights contract, which will run from 2021-24.
