The 23-year-old full-back’s contract at River expires in June 2021 and Los Millionarios could have to lower their expectations and sell the player for less than the €15m release clause in his current deal.

The defender’s agent Carracedo has claimed Roma will face competition from Spain, as Valencia have been registered with an interest.

“He is ready to take the big step to Europe,” Carracedo said, according to Alfredo Pedulla. “Many clubs want Gonzalo, including Valencia and Roma.

“At this moment, negotiations are on stand-by due to the coronavirus pandemic and the teams will be overly cautious on the costs. We will see what happens in the coming weeks.”

Montiel, who has played 19 times for La Banda in 2019-20, has been capped four times by Argentina so far.
