Former Catania forward Gonzalo Bergessio has claimed his ‘biggest mistake’ was to leave Italy and revealed he was close to joining Lazio in 2015.

The Argentine 35-year-old currently captains Club Nacional in Uruguay and looks back at his career, arguing that his peak came at Catania in Serie A.

“My best period was certainly in Italy, at Catania,” the centre-forward told Olé. “In those years I was really at an excellent level. People there loved me very much.

“But I also had some great seasons at Racing and San Lorenzo too. That period was very good, before going to Italy.”

But the veteran, capped three times by Argentina and scoring twice for the Albiceleste in the process, also played in Ligue 1 with AS Saint-Etienne.

He arrived in Italy on loan in January 2011 and convinced Catania to sign him on a permanent deal six months later.

After appearing 113 times, contributing 37 goals and 14 assists, he moved to Sampdoria in 2014 and revealed he was on the verge of moving to Lazio after one season with the Blucerchiati.

“I was going on loan to Lazio when I was at Sampdoria, but a Brazilian player didn’t want to move in the opposite direction,” he added.

“I was already on the plane when they told me nothing had happened, as the Brazilian had regretted the move. I was supposed to remain for another six months and I missed out on something big.

“It would have been nice to play there [at Lazio].”

After one season at the Marassi, Bergessio moved to the Mexican outfit Atlas Guadalajara and never returned to Europe.

“My biggest mistake was to leave Italy and try Mexican football. It didn’t work out for me and I went back to Argentina."
