Matteo Politano has called Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso a ‘great driving force’ and apologised for his Coppa Italia gesture against Juventus.

Gattuso recently led Napoli to Coppa glory, their first trophy for six years, and Politano believes there is more to the coach than just organising a defence.

“Gattuso’s a great driving force,” the winger told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“He tries to get the maximum out of everyone. People say we play ‘catenaccio’ because we’re organised defensively, but we also attack well.

“When we don’t have the ball, we try to stay compact and give away as little as possible, but when we have the ball, we know what to do with it.

“Gattuso’s someone who works a lot on both phases. We’re a compact team, like Inter and Juve. You have to be tight when defending against good teams.”

The Inter loanee courted controversy at the Olimpico, ‘shushing’ the Juve bench after he scored his penalty in the shootout.

“I shouldn’t have done it. I went to their players afterwards to apologise because it wasn’t a nice gesture.

“I was caught up in the adrenaline of the game, that’s why I reacted the way I did, but I shouldn’t have done it.”

Although the Partenopei are on a roll, Atalanta remain in control of Serie A’s fourth and final Champions League place…

“Atalanta are going strong, but we’re only thinking about ourselves, picking up as many points as possible.

“If the table says that we’ve qualified for the Champions League, it’ll mean that we’ve hit a great target.”
