Gian Piero Gasperini has claimed Napoli can’t catch Atalanta after the 2-0 win and wants to exceed the 72-point record in Bergamo this season.

Mario Pasalic and Robin Gosens gave La Dea a 2-0 win against Napoli on Thursday and their position in the top four was further improved by Roma’s defeat to Udinese the same day.

“All the wins are very good, but this tastes even better because we played well against a strong team,” Gasperini told the club’s website. “A well-deserved match with great maturity. We develop continuously.

“We scored two good goals. In the first half, we lowered the centre of gravity to defend ourselves. We were more solid and less energetic. In the second half, we had the game under control.”

Gasperini points out that the target has always been top four and aims to set a new record of points.

“It’s our fundamental target because it will allow us to play in the Champions League.

“The gap down to Napoli is too big, unrecoverable. The other object is to exceed 72 points and allow this team to enter the history of the club.”

The 62-year-old celebrated his 400th Serie A match in the dugout.

“I’m very happy, even if 400 games are too many and I have started looking back at them. I have always developed because Serie A forces you to always improve your game.

“These years at Atalanta are the best, despite being very close to my time at Genoa. I hope to overcome my tally at Genoa."
