Benevento forward Gabriele Moncini has claimed the Stregoni target the record of points in Serie B this term.

Crotone ended Benevento’s unbeaten run of 22 games last Friday and the former SPAL attacker wants to bounce back immediately and targets Juventus’ record of 85 points in 2006-07.

“We must redeem the defeat to Crotone,” he told OttoChannel ahead of the next match against Venezia on Friday. “We have a record of points to beat, so I don’t see why we should stop winning.

“The last games will be a preparation for next season. When I arrived in January, the team were 15 points ahead, so the chances of promotion were high.

“I had an immediate feeling that we were dominating the other teams, so the awareness of going to Serie A has grown more and more.”

Benevento have collected 76 points with six games remaining and matched Ascoli’s record of winning promotion with seven games to go this season.

The success has reflected the business on the transfer market, as Benevento have made moves for Loic Remy and Kamil Glik in recent weeks, as well as being linked with Mohamed Fares, Mario Mandzukic and Andre Schurrle.

“After such a championship it would be important to keep the backbone of this team,” Moncini said. “But it’s clear that Serie A is a totally different competition, so I hope there will be the right mix of old and new.

“All teams have great competition for a place in the squad. Havin players at a high level can only be a good thing. The purchase of Remy was an important signal from the club.

“But also to us who won the promotion, as we are being called on to earn our place. Fares would be a good signing, at SPAL he made a difference.

“Glik needs no introduction, his presence could be fundamental on the pitch, but especially in the dressing room. Mandzukic? He’s a fantastic player.”
