Lombardy has long been not just the worst-hit region, but also the area that had the most difficulty clamping down on the pandemic.

Official figures released by the local authorities confirm today that there were no COVID-19 deaths in Lombardy over the last 24 hours.

It’s the first time since the very start of the crisis on February 22 that this has been the case, when the very first Lombardy victim – 77-year-old Giovanna Carminati – passed away.

Over the entire country, there were three deaths registered since yesterday, a significant drop from the 14 that were announced on Saturday.

There are also relatively few new COVID-19 positive cases, with 33 out of 7,039 tests over 24 hours in Lombardy.

Of those 33, 15 were only discovered using blood tests, so the viral load was very low.

Throughout the country, there were 219 new positive cases from 35,525 tests, but another 143 were given the all-clear.

It means only 743 still remain hospitalised with symptoms, of which 49 are in intensive care, while 11,648 are still self-isolating at home with minor or no symptoms.

There have now been 35,045 deaths in Italy since the pandemic began on February 20.
