The story emerged in Germany this evening, first with Kicker and then Bild, that the talks going on since November had reached a negative conclusion.

Now Rangnick’s consultant Marc Kosicke has released a statement confirming the deal is off.

“AC Milan and Ralf Rangnick have agreed that it is not the right time at the moment and that there is no momentum for working together.

“Because of this, and taking into account the good development and the results under coach Stefano Pioli, it was decided jointly that Ralf Rangnick will not take on a role at AC Milan.”

Pioli is unbeaten in eight Serie A games, winning six of them, and multiple players including Hakan Calhanoglu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have publicly urged the club to stand by him.

He is under contract until June 2021, although that extension option was only valid if they qualified for the Champions League, according to the Corriere della Sera.

Milan are already paying Marco Giampaolo, who they fired in October, and would have to pay several million Euros to Red Bull in order to buy Rangnick out of his contract.

Rangnick wanted to take a dual role as coach and essentially sporting director, which would’ve pushed Paolo Maldini out of the equation.

This is practically unheard of in Italian football and had sparked some controversy.

The improvement in results under Pioli also put pressure on the club owners to at least ease Rangnick in with a directorial role while the Italian continued on as coach for another season.

However, neither man was happy with the idea of that arrangement.
